Inspired by Wordpress’ seriously clever use of Loren Brichter’s new Tweetie options, we’re launching our own Tweetie and Twitterrific compatible API. This Twitter-like API should make it easy for a lot of existing Twitter clients to start supporting Tumblr.

The really cool thing - because our following models follow a lot of the same principles, we’ve been able to take advantage of a ton of native features:

Retweeting = Reblogging

Replying = Reblogging w/ commentary

Favoriting = Liking

“@david” = ”http://david.tumblr.com/”

Conversations = Reblogs

To try out Tumblr in Tweetie 2, tap “Accounts” → “+” → enter your username and password → tap the gear icon → enter “http://tumblr.com/” in both fields.

For Twitterrific, tap ”Sources” → “Edit” → “Add a New Account” → enter your username and password → tap ”Advanced” → set “Base URL” to “http://tumblr.com/” and disable “SSL”.

It’s pretty depressing that I have to help (through taxes) big business raise a product that creates massive amounts of pollution, among many other ill effects. Now, however, people are beginning to cut meat and dairy out of their diets, so the decreased demand for these products has caused producers to panic. Their solution? If we don’t want to buy the product anymore, they’ll just get the government to buy more of it for us.

The genius initiative is called MEAT the Need. Recipients of food stamps or other grocery subsidies (36 million people) would be given extra bucks—so long as they spent the money on animal products.

Some Suggestions For Tumblr

The wonderful chick known as spaceships has compiled a wishlist of features she’d like to see coming from Tumblr. My favorite is this one:

Separate “additional comments/description” box for quotes posts. I mean for the love of god. Some of the most interesting discussions are taking place entirely in bold-face type.

Twitter is a good example of following the user. In the beginning there were no replies, mentions, hashtags or retweets, but it’s all grown organically and intuitively, and Twitter has grown to accomodate the needs of its users. Because people are using the citation box for more than citations, Tumblr really ought to add in an extra text box.

Similar to adding a separate box to the Quotes, I’d like to be able to add titles to all of my posts if I want. I know Marco doesn’t give a shit about blog formalities, but I’d love to get a bit more consistency between post types.

Ability to comment on a post without reblogging it. Disqus is unbelievably poorly integrated. From my dash, I cant tell if any given tumblr has even added Disqus. People have been clamoring for some built-in commenting or communication system (like MeMail) since the dawn of Tumblr to no avail. But the thing is, the broken-ass way people have been attempting conversation with each other via reblogs are some of the most hopeful signs of intelligent life on Tumblr. More and more, Tumblr has become an echo chamber of mindless reblogging and liking — i.e. a center of frantic but ultimately futile activity. You’ve got all these notes, but what are they tracking really? Nothing substantial at all. But there’s still a good chunk of users who want to use it as a platform to actually interact with each other meaningfully. Do you see Tumblr as a publishing “community” or not? If so, don’t half ass it.

If that’s off the table, how about a more sensible way to follow an ongoing conversation among 3+ people through reblogs? As it stands, after 2 people have struck up a discussion, anyone who jumps in later gets lost in the shuffle and their comments are not readily incorporated into the running thread, which eventually fragments, and you don’t know which response to reblog and tack on your comments to, and all hell breaks loose and aahh I almost stepped on a baby bird wtf?

I don’t see Tumblr adding a comment system because the staffers don’t believe comments are valuable to the internet as a whole. Forcing you to reblog a post in order to formally comment on it is a way of keeping people accountable and minimizes drive-by snark. Nobody wants to troll someone else’s blog if it’s going to ruin the credibility of their own blog in the process. They could add better support for Disqus, but that flies in the face of the point they’re making.

But while 80% of all comments are shit (you can thank YouTube for that), 80% of all reblogs are shit, too. The internet can ask for a good commenting or reblogging system all it wants, but most people aren’t going to bother doing it nicely. That’s why you get endless pyramids of blockquoted usernames and hard-to-track reblogversations: few are taking the time to actually edit their content into a coherent entry.

All I want for christmas is a more robust API. If we have that, we can take care of some of the rest ourselves, but there really isn’t an API at all outside a get and post system.

I’ll need to remember this idea for my house since I hate drying my own dishes and running the dishwater due to its waste. I’d prefer to see the entire inside cabinet lined with stainless steel though. Thanks Apartment Therapy.

I want to do this but there is no where to put one. Actually, I would worry about the outlet in the picture above. Luckily, there’s lots of counter space for a dish drying rack.

What I like about this image is that it’s multi-layered. Let me explain:

1) She’s in her third trimester. Do you really think liberal women are running around aborting third-term pregnancies? Ninety percent of abortions occur in the first trimester.

2) She’s wearing hooker makeup and feminist-symbol earrings… oh, I get it! Because liberals and feminists are whores!

3) “Liberal compassion” is what allows women - even a woman like this - the right to choose motherhood, instead of being forced in to it.

I wish I had a shirt like that.

I don’t think Obama would look that old by 2020, but I still enjoy this campaign.

This has been at the back of my mind for a few days. Yes, we want change. Yes, we want Obama to enact that change. But I get the feeling that anything he can’t do, will get laid on his shoulders for decades. That he will be the president who failed, because everyhting was so fucked up to begin with.

And what really pisses me off is that Bush is having a ball on his ranch in texas or wherever, and though everyone seems to agree he was a bad president, he doesn’t get held to task anymore. That man was a fucking genius.

And I am wary of saying this - I’m disappointed too, but Obama can’t do everything at once.
